WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Madeleine Dean (PA-04) released the following statement on Afghanistan:

"I am heartbroken to watch the events of Afghanistan. The Taliban has seized Kabul — and the future of the Afghan people, particularly Afghan women and girls, is in peril.

There will be time for us to analyze our regrets of the last 20 years. We completed our original mission — and now we must focus on safely evacuating all American citizens and streamlining the process of providing a safe haven for our allies.

My team will do whatever we can to evacuate Americans and allies from Afghanistan. It is our duty.

Finally, I thank all the veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom and all service members who bravely fought in Afghanistan. Your service and sacrifice to the United States over the last two decades — both at home and abroad — are not in vain."

Rep. Madeleine Dean is a mother, grandmother, attorney, professor, former four-term member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and U.S. Representative for the Fourth District of Pennsylvania.
