POTTSTOWN, Pa. — Each spring, the United States House of Representatives sponsors a nation-wide Congressional Art Competition to highlight the remarkable talent of high school students. In honor of Pennsylvania’s Fourth District participants, Congresswoman Madeleine Dean hosted an art exhibit and reception at Montgomery County Community College’s Pottstown campus for students, teachers, and families.

This year’s winner is Chris Qin, a junior from The Shipley School, for his piece, “Breakthrough.”

The Runners Up are:

  1. "Watch Your Words" by Lila Weingarten, a junior at Spring-Ford High School

  2. "A Mother's Love" by Klea Hasa, a junior Abington Senior High School

This year also included a new caterogy, Best Photography, awarded to Henry Zidek, a sophomore from The Hill School, for "Lost."

“Every year, I’m amazed by our student artists — not just their impressive skills but their ability to express their lives and experiences through profound, moving art,” Rep. Dean said. “It was a joy to recognize their talents, as well as the dedication of their teachers and families. Congratulations to all our talented students, especially Chris Qin on his beautiful and thoughtful work that will proudly represent our Fourth Congressional District at the Capitol.”

"My artwork, breakthrough, is a self-portrait that expressed my exploration and change of my characteristics from introvert to extrovert using acrylic paints on canvas," Chris said. "It is my pleasure to share my artwork with people to tell them it is important to understand who they really are."

Chris Qin’s artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. The artwork from the runners-up will be displayed in Congresswoman Dean’s district offices in Glenside and Pottstown.

This year’s Congressional Art Competition was judged by Margaret Griffen, Executive Director for Cheltenham Center for the Arts and Lauren Mccardel, Executive Director of Ursinus College Museum of Art.
