WASHINGTON, DC – Following passage of House Republicans’ budget reconciliation bill, Congresswoman Madeleine Dean (PA-04), member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement:

“Today, House Republicans passed a bill that sacrifices critical programs for millions of everyday Americans to pay for another tax cut for the rich — blowing up the deficit by an estimated $5 trillion in service of the President’s cruel, corrupt purposes.

This bill eliminates healthcare for nearly 14 million Americans.

With $736 billion in cuts to Medicaid, seniors, disabled Americans, and hardworking families will be unable to afford the care they deserve. In my district alone, that means more than 110,000 people — including 61,000 children, 14,000 seniors — will now have their health and well-being at risk. Across Pennsylvania, that means 100,000 people struggling with addiction may lose their only chance at recovery.

This bill guts more than $300 billion from nutrition programs.

In Berks and Montgomery Counties, more than 48,000 people rely on SNAP to feed their families. At a time when nearly 125,000 people in my district — and more than 47 million nationwide — are facing hunger, cutting food assistance is unconscionable.

This bill would raise taxes on middle and working class families, while handing huge tax breaks to the wealthiest among us, exploding the deficit.

According to one estimate, the poorest will pay nearly $1,000 per year more in taxes, while the top 0.01% will pay $400,000 less. This is not just horribly inequitable — it will irresponsibly balloon our deficit by nearly $5 trillion.

Our government has the obligation to do good for its people — to care for our most vulnerable — children, seniors, veterans. And Congress must be a responsible steward of the national deficit while ensuring the wealthy pay their fare share in taxes.

This bill accomplishes none of those goals — it does the opposite. I voted ‘No.’”
