WASHINGTON — Today, Reps. Dean, Wild, Scanlon, Boyle, Evans, Doyle and Cartwright sent a letter to encourage Senator Toomey to resist hypocrisy and reverse his decision to replace Justice Ginsburg before the election.

The letter comes after Senator Toomey decided to support filling Justice Ginsburg’s seat following her death on Friday.

Rep. Dean referenced Senator Toomey’s 2016 quote when President Obama sought to fill the vacancy created by Justice Scalia’s passing in February of that election year.

"[W]e have an election right around the corner. With lifetime tenure, the next justice will determine the Court’s balance for a generation.” said Senator Toomey. “In that light, I believe it is sensible to allow the American people to participate in the choice of Justice Scalia’s successor less than seven months from now."

The letter references the greater principle of precedence that United States democracy relies upon and the importance of past precedents followed by present cases.
