WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Madeleine Dean (PA-04) — member of the House Appropriations Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies (CJS) Subcommittee — filed amendments to Congressional Republicans’ fiscal year 2026 funding bill to reinstate funding to prevent gun violence, support law enforcement, and keep our communities safe.

Currently, the FY26 CJS funding bill includes a cut of $2.1 billion — a 2.6% reduction from FY25. To combat these cuts, Congresswoman Dean introduced an amendment to restore $100 million for Community Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative programs, which give states, localities, and local law enforcement the resources and freedom to address crime at the local level.

Additionally, Congresswoman Dean introduced an amendment to remove language limiting the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms’ ability to carry out its Demand 2 program. The Demand 2 program helps law enforcement trace guns used in crimes by imposing additional reporting requirements on firearms dealers whose guns have been traced to criminal activity.

“The time for thoughts and prayers is over — we need a budget that delivers action to end our gun violence epidemic. This funding bill not only weakens prevention programs, intervention that we know works, it also guts funding for law enforcement,” Rep. Dean said. “My amendments would ensure that communities have the resources they need to keep residents safe and prevent criminals from obtaining firearms. Now more than ever, we must defend justice, democracy, and the rule of law.”
