WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Madeleine Dean, member of the House Committee on the Judiciary and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, released the following statement regarding the indictment of Senator Bob Menendez:
“As an elected official from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I’ve worked alongside New Jersey Representatives and Senators for years. Senator Bob Menendez has a long history of advocacy for which we are all grateful.
However, amid news of his indictment, I am calling on Senator Menendez to resign.
No one is above the law. And while I respect the presumption of innocence in our justice system, I also believe in holding our elected officials to a higher standard.
The charges against Senator Menendez are serious. These are charges that will take significant time, effort, and funds to fight – which would substantially interfere with the Senator’s ability to represent the people of New Jersey in the way they deserve.
Additionally, the evidence from the Department of Justice’s investigation is overwhelming. As I’ve said before, regarding former President Trump: this amount of compelling evidence coupled with such serious charges represents the behavior of a person unfit for public office.
I am saddened to see this conduct from a U.S. Senator – and I will always stand up to elected officials who misuse the power granted to them by voters in our democracy.”
Rep. Madeleine Dean is a mother, grandmother, attorney, professor, former four-term member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and U.S. Representative for the Fourth District of Pennsylvania.
