Today, Rep. Madeleine Dean voted for H.R. 1, the For the People Act. The bill offers sweeping electoral and campaign finance reform and tightens government ethics standards. It passed by a margin of 234-193.
“Everyone knows that our electoral system favors the wealthy and well-connected, but for years, Congress has refused to act,” said Rep. Dean. “That changes today. With the passage of this legislation, we say no to voter suppression, gerrymandering, and dark money influence – and yes to elections that welcome all Americans on an equal playing field.”
H.R. 1’s specific provisions fall into three categories:
Ensuring Clean and Fair Elections
The bill provides for automatic voter registration, promotes online and same-day registration, prohibits voter roll purges, restores voting rights to citizens who have completed criminal sentences, ends partisan gerrymandering, and strengthens our election security system against interference.
Ending the Era of Big Money in Politics
H.R. 1 requires organizations that spend money on elections to reveal donors who contribute in excess of $10,000. The bill also requires digital platforms to do more to prevent election interference from foreign nationals. In addition, H.R. 1 creates a matching system for small-dollar donations to federal candidates.
Government Ethics Reform
H.R. 1 strengthens conflict of interest rules within government, tightens lobbying disclosure requirements, significantly slows the revolving door between government and K Street, and forbids Congress from using taxpayer funds to settle employment discrimination cases.
