GLENSIDE, Pa. — Congresswoman Madeleine Dean (PA-04) released the following statement on President Trump's Executive Order to dismantle the Department of Education:
"How we educate our children will determine not just their future, but our own.
Today, President Trump made good on a dark and dismaying promise — to dismantle the Department of Education. This is the latest in a long and ever-growing list of President Trump’s attempts to erode trust in American institutions.
This is a direct attack on our children, their families, and their right to a quality education.
President Trump continues to sow chaos and fear. And once again, the most vulnerable — our nation’s children — will bear the weight. Students with disabilities, students seeking federal aid to further their education, and students from our poorest communities will suffer.
In addition to being detrimental to education, President Trump’s action is illegal. The Department was created, through law, by Congress. No executive action can make it disappear — that power belongs to Congress alone.
As a former educator, I know that our children are our future. By choking federal resources from our schools and generating confusion, President Trump is putting our future at risk. I will do everything in my power to support Pennsylvania’s students, teachers, and staff during this difficult time."
