Who are Pennsylvania lawmakers bringing to the State of the Union address?
Each member of Congress gets to bring a guest to the president’s annual State of the Union address, which President Donald Trump will give Tuesday evening in the U.S. House of Representatives’ chamber.
Often those guests have a political significance, with several lawmakers inviting workers affected by the recent federal government shutdown or those active on an issue important to them, such as gun control.
Here’s who Pennsylvania lawmakers say they have invited to watch from the House gallery, and why:
U.S. Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Montgomery
Dean’s guest will be Jami Amo, a Willow Grove resident, gun safety activist, and survivor of the 1999 Columbine school shooting.
Dean described Amo as a friend who has become “a courageous activist” since living through one of American’s worst school shootings.
“Gun violence kills 40,000 Americans every year — and another 80,000 are wounded in the crossfire,” Dean said in a statement. “Surrounding these victims are entire communities that suffer too.”
